On the other side a church, a castle and a few decrepit houses of originally even daring architecture, now emanating an odour of fresh paint, processed ale, old socks and lavendula. Altogether another sad place with the soldierly charme of a lost forepost , forlorn in the vast and fertile plains of Suffolk's fens.
