UGANDA, 1991

Her black skin
rides my blood
Her wild mind
tickles my brain

I fumble with ashes,
angry and vain,
fragments of this smell,
they burnt the grass again

I see the sound of light
coming with the rain
Now it is a fetal green
coming violently bright

My heart touches here,
termites eat my memory,
wasps settle in my mouth,
I am a spirit there

Lonely priests at night
ask my advice,
the dogs bark
and children cry

Millet beer,
they beat the drums,
mosquitoes dance
I watch

But I cannot answer
I am a dream
My love is lost

under the corrugated iron roof: memories of Uganda

Under the corrugated iron roof
with the drumming of the rain,
the grumbling of thunder,
the buzz of mosquitoes,

off and on the barking of dogs,
following sultry days
this scent of wet earth
came with soothing cool,

The deep sleeps came
like salvation, silence
inside and when the cock
crowed the morning was light

flowing and permeating
sky and faces and soul
with the hope we all need,
the clearness of newborn life

Roland from Uganda

And now I found Roland Schopf from Kampala. He is staying here in Germany just now, and I am sure we will meet again. He was a good friend. Last time I saw him maybe 1990 in Uganda. Just found out checking the web.

A few weeks ago I made email - contact with Hans-Martin Fischer who is running 2 hotels in Uganda. Meinko had mentioned his whereabouts.

One of his daughters runs a band, http://www.reisegruppefischer.de.
I missed out on them last Friday. She is living very near to my home.

I should really enjoy to see all of them again.

Between Berwick on Tweed, Schwäbische Alb and Cinqueterre

A nice 3 weeks of holiday. One week alone in Berwick (UK), 8 days down in Italy,
most of them in Levanto next to the Cinqueterre.
And mixed with that mails from allover the world,
from Meinko and Koba ( now in the Algarve) and from Hans-Martin ( still in Uganda).
All of them I knew in Uganda, friends in difficult and beautiful days past. Meinko found me out via this blog here.
I will show you some pictures from the Cinqueterre, friends, family.

Tonino

This is crazy. I spent five years in Uganda, West Nile. Now I see this courageous priest, Father Tonino Pasolini, he got a radio station organised up there with Arua Catholic Diocese in Idi Amin's home area, near the Sudanese and Zaire borders. And I could suddenly reach him via email, I could hardly believe it. I feel very very homesick. I would not give away one day out of five years in Uganda. As Kennedy may have said it: " I am a Ugandan". My best wishes for everybody out there.

Maracha Hospital - UGANDA 1984 -1989 - poetry 1990

FLAME TREE

Flame tree in Maraca:
red flames
the verandah,
yellow flares, green hedge,
chicken, children,
light

This cruel brightness
no words

Scars
burning leopards
too sudden, too bright

The eyes of Vincent van Gogh
thirsting for fire
Blake's tiger
eating in the dark

The moon of Maraca
very near
the flame tree
and snakes
move in the matoke,
guard my garden

For all this
is my world
I want to eat
flame trees,
breathe fire,
burn,
and incredibly bright
turn light
